Shift Differential

by John Gilbert © 2005

As Jasper rushed up the short, wide stairway in front of the lab building, he saw his partner on the graveyard shift rushing in just a few seconds behind him. "Good evening Franko" he said, waiting at the front door. "Blasted bit of weather we're having."

"Hi Jasper" answered Franko, "Why does it always rain the first day back from vacation? So what did I miss the last week?"

"Just a pile of work. I'm glad to have you back!" Although the lab had several dozen daytime workers, at night it was only Jasper and Franko doing lab work, with an occasional visit by a security guard or cleaning person. "I hope the day crew has everything properly put away today" said Jasper, as he struggled with his key in the heavy lab door, "I'm getting very tired of how they keep leaving the lab."

As Jasper and Franko entered the darkened lab, the only sounds were the rain and wind gusts hitting the large windows. The only light was an irregular glow reflected from the street lamp off the river of water flowing down the street. "I'd forgotten how creepy this place looks in the dark" mentioned Franko. "Let's get some light in here." As they illuminated the lab, the two workers saw the lab was not left in order. Dirty glassware was piled around the sinks, reference books were laying open, and several jars of reagents had been left sitting out.

"Whatever happened to the good neighbor policy? Whatever happened to leaving the lab the way you want to find it, Day Shift sets up for Night Shift, Night Shift sets up for Day Shift" lamented an exasperated Jasper.

Walking over to the 'work pending' section of the lab, the duo found rack after rack of specimens and scribbled notes describing half unfinished tests and batch jobs.

"Did they all take off early? Look at this pile of unfinished work!" exclaimed Franko.

"I think they had a seminar on new procedures for handling tissue samples. Probably that got out a little bit early, and everyone took off" said Jasper.

"It must be nice." said Franko. "Oh look at this, I think they are using my desk as a dining table again! What did they spill here, tea? I have drink circles all over my desk!"

"Well come look at what is on my desk, Franko" implored Jasper. Sitting on Jasper's desk was a very large pink box, slightly stained. As the two workers opened the box, they saw inside was a disembodied human heart.

"Oh this is just too much!" shouted Jasper. "Day shift trashes the place, spills stuff all over our desks, gets out of all the work by going to a seminar all day and then leaving early. Then they have the nerve to leave the two of us with this heart" As the two ogres looked up at one another, Jasper continued, "I guess it is too much to hope for a liver or kidney. Just one little, chewy heart. Oh well, Franko my friend, get a knife and I will split it with you."
